I just don't get it, what am I doing wrong?
Frida was frustrated that her team weren’t showing the levels of enthusiasm she expected from them. “I don’t get it, I’m really good to them, they are paid above industry average, our business is in year on year growth, I offer really flexible working. So why are they like this? Why aren’t they ambitious to do more?”.
Running a business, leading a team, requires a lot from us, sometimes it can feel like really hard work.
When Frida asked to work with me, she came to me frustrated with her own team. “I don’t get it”. She kept on saying, “why are they like this, what am I doing wrong?”
We discussed her team, her approach, possible new hires and succession planning. Frida hadn’t even allowed herself to think about that anymore, she couldn’t see anyone around her who was capable enough to take that on.
Then the penny dropped for her. “I’m trying too hard, I want to be the best boss and have them all like me, so I’m giving them everything they ask for. But I’ve stopped voicing what I need. Which is drive right now. I’ve also not shared with them where I want us to go, so how can I expect them to get behind this”.
Frida quickly realised that she had started to give up on her team.
In our coaching calls she was able to step back from the business and see what needs to change. She started to see where she was blocking progress. For her it started with realigning herself with what she wants to create, her vision (not the vision of six years ago when the business started), and then what structure and people she will need in place to make that happen.
Frustration can be a gift. There is something there for you to learn about yourself and then grow from.
