It’s Time to Be Dazzled

I heard Gina Devee, former psychotherapist, now women’s coach, talk yesterday. She said she asks the universe every day, “how will you dazzle me today?”

It stopped me in my tracks.

Remember, I like questions. Beautiful, powerful questions. So when I hear a different sort of question, it transfixes me. This was one of those questions. I guess deep down, I thought I had to dazzle, impress, work hard to be noticed. But her question made me stop and think. What if it’s the other way round? What if I’m here to be dazzled? I woke up to this question in my thoughts the next morning. It made me chuckle, and I decided to play with it and see where it took me.

I found myself smiling at every runner on my morning run, thinking maybe they were there to dazzle me. I was smiling at my inbox, wondering what was dazzling in it today. This is even making me laugh to write. It seems so naff, and yet it really tickled me.

How will you be dazzled today?

It’s a choice, after all. The same choice as the boss who asks, ‘who in my team will annoy me today?’ Both are choices. One feels a whole lot better to write down and certainly to say out loud. Why go actively searching for the negatives when you can be impressed and dazzled by someone or something? I know what I would like to see every day.

It almost takes you back to your childhood, where you were amazed by new things daily. As children, we saw the world through a different lens, one that would highlight the bright sparkle of people, places and objects.

Did we lose that ability, or do we forget to acknowledge it when we see it? Are we too bogged down by the mundane to stop and be dazzled a few times a day?

Where will you find that dazzle?

It’s not a matter of where, but who. The people we surround ourselves with matter.

You will have heard the famous Jim Rohn quote: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” You have to wonder whether this is true. What I do know is when you’re with the right people, you feel lifted, engaged, inspired. And those people don’t have to be in your close circle. They can also be the people you listen to on audiobooks and podcasts, on courses and during seminars.

Choose to surround yourself with those that inspire you. They do not need to see or show up in the world the same way as you do. But you do need to let them spark your curiosity. Let them in so you can see a different perspective, so like me, you can ask yourself a different question. You can be dazzled every day. And maybe you’re the one being dazzling for someone else.

What’s dazzling me?

This was going to start as a blog about seeking out inspiration. I guess that’s what’s dazzling me at the moment. It’s those people out there inspiring me to do better. They inspire me to do things differently, to have more fun, to laugh when I wake up in the morning at the seemingly audacious questions I could ask.

What’s here to dazzle you?
